TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
At my last place of employment, there was a manager who constantly
insisted that the operator manuals for our very expensive and very
complex product should be styled just like a car's owner manual: all
sorts of generic stuff up front, slap all the options in the back (no
matter how they integrated into the product).
After hearing this a few times, I did some research and discovered
that the McLaren F1 was in the same price range and production rate as
our product, then described the owner's manual, and said I'd be happy
to do something similar.
He never brought up the operator manual format again.
