Have you tried sorting the table in word then copying it and pasting it into the Confluence editor tool rather than into the Confluence html? I noted when I tried a quick demo version of Confluence that the built-in editor is very similar to the built-in editor in WordPress. I use that sort of workflow to build tables for WordPress pages because WordPress has very limited support for tables.
