Every job or contract I've had as a tech writer has had Bachelor's 
degree as a requirement, yet I don't have one. I do, however, have two 
Associate's (two year) degrees: Electromechanica Technology (Robotics) 
and Technical Communication. I got the degree in Electromechanical 
Technology first and it gave me enough technical knowledge to understand 
what was going on under the hood of a laser trim system for the hybrid 
microelectronics industry. That was my first job as a technical writer 
and I'll always be grateful that my boss at that company took a chance 
on me.

I've encountered two companies that won't consider me because I don't 
have a Bachelor's degree... one of 'em is too far to drive on a daily 
basis and the other one, just two miles down the road from my house, is 
way too stuffy anyway... women must wear skirts or dresses and men must 
wear ties. I've worn my last tie.

I do, however, have a friend who got fired from his job as the 
programming manager at a large corporation when a "new broom" came in 
and decided that anyone on his staff who didn't have a degree wasn't 
qualified.
