Which technical documents, and how did it save them? I'm familiar with the accident, but not the documentation issues.

Sorry to rehash this as late as it is, but we were discussing this topic and whether tech docs could prevent big liabilities or not. Without missing a beat, one guy said over the cube wall "1979, American Airlines DC-10."

The correct technical documents saved McDonnell Douglas from a huge liability, although they still suffered a huge publicity hit from the crash.
At least American Airlines had to shoulder the responsibility and the costs.
