more information on where these "statistics" come from.
According to a recent study approximately 74.34% of statistical figures quoted in reports are simply made up.
On a slightly more serious note, it turns out that by using statistical tests it is sometimes possible to determine whether numerical "evidence" is real or made up. When people are asked to make up random numbers, they tend to select some digits more frequently than others. Several other tests, some more complicated than "frequency of digits" are also possible.
If someone presents a supposedly scientific study, but refuses to show any original data, perhaps only giving averages, then the study should be suspected of being fraudulent.
