Also, there are (or used to be) academic departments named Communications that are unrelated to technical writing. Some of these are for communication studies (theories about how people communicate verbally and nonverbally), electronic communications (broadcast media and Internet), etc.

This is about what I would expect from a student whose exposure to the field has all been through academia and web sites (there's no mention of her having done any interning out in the real world). Will be interesting to see if she posts any updates down the road that compare her current expectations of her prospects with her actual experience once she gets out of school.
