If and only if the recruiter specifies you are NOT to show up wearing a suit, then don't show up wearing a suit.

I always wear my Sunday suit to important events.

I'm old-school.

I've never gone to any interview without wearing a tie. And I usually wear a suit. It's not a crime to be overdressed.

And when I interviewed others for senior positions at a company in Grass Valley, CA, I was quite shocked when candidates showed up without so much as a sport coat and tie.

Although you're desirous of a technical writing position, you never know when a company might want to send you out as an ambassador. In so doing, the powers that be might want you to wear a suit. Why not demonstrate from the get-go that you're able to represent the company in this manner?
