I don't think the trend is limited to software. Generally speaking, instructions for most consumer level products have been migrating away from "manuals" and towards quick-look cards and labels for quite some time now. The last thing I bought was a tablet, and the "instructions" were a series of pictograms printed on the bottom of the box.

The printed safety and other regulatory inserts, on the other hand, took up almost as much space in the box as the tablet. If you're determined to maintain a career writing for end users, switching from writing "how to" to "don't ever" would probably be a good move.
