I graduated as a Mechanical & Aeronautical Engineer and went straight to
being a Manufacturing Engineer, which I didn't even know existed. Aerospace
stuff, welding and sheet metal shop were my specialties.I spent 20 years
doing this until a layoff and I came to the realization that I was really a
Technical Writer, just for a very narrow audience.

I expanded into software writing and spent another 10 years in software.

Now, I'm back in Aerospace, writing operation and maintenance manuals for
small scale jet aircraft. Mechanical stuff again, finally. While I could do
software, hardware is where my expertise shines.

Yeah, I am one of the exceptions of an Engineer who can write. I have to
avoid reading the engineering reports I also work on just for pleasure due
to deadlines. Let me work on the wind tunnel reports, please!
