There's nothing leading-edge about XML. DITA and DocBook are old news.
Among developers, for most purposes XML seems to have been supplanted
by JSON. I keep seeing reports of people doing tech docs with
Markdown, AsciiDoc, and similar yet-another-markup-languages, but the
associated tools seem quite lame compared with what's available for
DITA and DocBook.

InDesign is not suitable for technical authoring unless you deliver
only PDF and/or print.
