My responses below:
Do technical editors still use hard copy for edits? (Is this a personal preference or a department/company policy? For example, personally, I like to see a hardcopy to edit, and then I make my edits electronically.)

No, I only use hard copy to check page layouts in case someone is printing a pdf. This way I find out if the footers/headers/title page looks correct on paper.

When editing electronically, do you use track changes (such as MS Word)? Do you edit in Adobe products (such as Acrobat Pro)? Do you use iPad applications (such as IAnnotate, Cabinet, or QuickEdit)?

Editing: Yes to both MSWord with track changes on (!) and Adobe Acrobat Pro.
I do not use IPad applications at work.

How do tablets figure in to your editing?
As my company doesn't use tablets internally, I don't use one for technical writing or editing. However, I do check that my dynamic output works on tablet and mobile form because customer may use this. This testing is possible using a simulator built into the application I use (MadCap Flare).
For other types of writing and editing, I do use an IPad and the application Pages among others. I don't use a specific 'editing' application as yet but I may do soon.

Subject: Need Feedback from Technical Editors

All:

I have been teaching technical editing since 2005, and your response to the discussion about what editors in the workforce should know (see More than Grammar, (https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__tinyurl.com_h43bapf&d=CwICAg&c=r8e_2craKrV6D47TmKYPXpXJg_yAmgbggEcE6TnkxiU&r=0pullH_UgzVTqxIAInnB7AW2NbePy4eMMN-3_2DAfE-vZgIzNIHajeh2Pu-2Dgor&m=PNFY0qHigs_3__evFzZ45jQ2si7hTGODizEfyxjmcp0&s=VZWxRRa2lSyHkIfqRxxrqpgwyYeW6KVuYVMMFJjuZhc&e= ) has helped me refine my teaching. That said, I would like to follow up on 2007 article about using e-editing VS hardcopy editing in the profession. My position, as an instructor, is that hardcopy editing has not gone away. So, I teach half of the semester using traditional copy editing marks for editing documents, and the second half teaching track changes (MS Word, Pages, as well as other tablet apps). So, I have the following questions:

Do technical editors still use hard copy for edits? (Is this a personal preference or a department/company policy? For example, personally, I like to see a hardcopy to edit, and then I make my edits electronically.)

When editing electronically, do you use track changes (such as MS Word)? Do you edit in Adobe products (such as Acrobat Pro)? Do you use iPad applications (such as IAnnotate, Cabinet, or QuickEdit)?

How do tablets figure in to your editing?

I appreciate your time and feedback.

Shelley
