Re: STC Certification
One page says:^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
"If you are a Technical Author, a technical Content Strategist, Information Designer, Publication Manager, Documentation Manager, Information Developer, Technical Illustrator or Translator, the ISTC is the professional association that can help you through your career."
Another says:
"ISTC members are technical authors, technical illustrators, scientific writers, instructional designers, business writers, information architects, technical trainers, documentation managersâ In fact, anyone with an interest in communicating complex information clearly."
Nope. Nothing about technical writers. Looks like TECHWR-L is the last bastion!

As a footnote to the discussion of STC Certification, you may want to have a look at the approach that the UK's professional association for technical writers, the ISTC, has to education and professional development, by way of contrast:
http://www.istc.org.uk/professional-development-and-recognition/continuing-professional-development/
You should be aware that becoming a full member of the ISTC is restricted to those who are considered to have sufficient experience and/or qualifications. New entrants to the profession or those otherwise interested in the profession may join as Junior or Associate members (see http://www.istc.org.uk/join-the-istc/how-to-join-the-istc/).
