Re: LinkedIn - Facebook for Professionals? or is it really "Myspace"

I used LinkedIn extensively for my last job search.  And the recruiter who
connected me with my new job found me via LinkedIn.

When I was hiring at my last job, I checked the LinkedIn profiles of every
candidate that I was interested in hiring. Technical Writing is a small
world, and a couple of times it turned out that we had mutual
friends/former co-workers. I put one person in the "do not call" pile when
I saw that they had three different half-completed profiles.  I figured if
they weren't technical enough to manage their online reputation and
profiles, they probably weren't detail oriented enough for what I was
looking for.

Not sure why you and your daughter were getting weird results.  The "people
you may know" always seems to reflect the industry of the last person I
added as a contact.  I haven't had LinkedIn send me job search results (I
went in and did my own homework), so I have no idea how good their
algorithms might be, or what might affect your results.
