In 1997, FDA published a guidance for software validation. It includes a nine-bullet list titled simply, "Software is Different from Hardware." Still one of my favorite lists.

In the olden days before software, just about everything was documented before it existed. Because you can actually predict what most machinery is going to do based on the drawings.
