It's sort of a solution without a problem, or better yet, a solution that's already being taken care of behind the scenes, as you say.

I have a few VMs that I use from time to time.
Some have one version or another of Linux - to play with whatever software catches my eye.
I installed LaTex a while back, just for fun.
Some others have obsolete versions of Windows on them - one with CorelDraw 11 and Ventura Publisher 8.
Why clutter up my machine with stuff I seldom use?

So, those are just ways to un-clutter the main install.
