My experience has been that age is not really that big a factor in contract gigs, because agencies and clients will try to hire on the cheap regardless of how old or young you are. And when you're trying to hire on the cheap, overqualified isn't that big a factor either, because more experience for less money is actually a good thing.

For "permanent" hires (are there really still companies trying to claim there's such a thing?), I long ago concluded that what really turns hiring managers off about older candidates is the fear that hiring someone who is older and more experienced will bring on board someone who knows more about their jobs than they do, might be better able to do their jobs than they are and may more readily recognize and call out various types and levels of management BS when they hear it.
