A procedure that works with almost any program is to blur the image then
adjust the levels (or gamma or contrast) to turn the grays into black. This
works okay under certain conditions: if the image is black-and-white, if
you want modify to the whole image (not just a selected line), if the
resolution is pretty high, and if you don't mind the the line ends getting
smoothed and rounded.
