I worked at IBM in the early '80s and remember the insular and cocooning culture. Being an IMBer was a lifetime plan, down to the bowling, picnicking, and other recreation that the "IBM Club" (yes, its real name) organized.
As for the "turkey farm," I remember when my father sold his partnership in his law practice and became general counsel for a very large national association. The key clause in his contract was that the association had to either maintain him in a position with authority commensurate with his title and salary or satisfy the cancellation provisions of his employment contract. No cubicle or turkey farm for him as long as he was under executive contract.
