Not always, but more frequently than I would like, I find that the SME who nit-picks the grammar also overlooks the technical blunder that he was supposed to find.

The very sneaky and underhanded way of smoking out those people is to insert deliberate errors of fact. Programmers occasionally do the same thing in an attempt to quantify the rate of generation and detection of real bugs in the code. It's called "bebugging". If the QC crowd cannot find your inserted bugs, then they are surely missing some real ones, too.
