Last year at DITA Europe this topic came up. It seems to be a thing in Europe. The idea is that IoT and automation in manufacturing will spawn different "information" concerns. If the "thing" about this seems flaky, it's probably the "documentation" participation in it. From what I recall, the idea is to use XML to transport information to different machine (like) components so they can respond more flexibly. But I'm pretty much talking off the top of my head. I would look around in Germany for more information.
