Craig:

My wife/partner is certified as a SHRM-SCP and maintains 6-8 executive coaching clients as part of our overall practice of consulting with nonprofit organizations. Her advice would be very similar to Tony's, except she would see the job search as an opportunity for the client to explore his or her career ambitions. In her experience, too many people - even executive level talent - are: 1) seeking jobs rather than building careers; and 2) tend to underestimate the portability of their talents as well as skills into new opportunities.

Looking at the deep sale rack at Barnes & Noble one day, I found a softcover book with 150 examples of resume styles which she found very helpful in her coaching work. The book really brought home to me that there is no one "right" way to do a resume. Success in resume writing involves the "fit" between the candidate's strengths as well as the preferences and expectations of the industry in general and specific hiring managers in particular.
