When you send this way, the address appears to come from the @<domain.com>
address, but the tracking still comes through gmail.

He needs the SMTP server of his <domain.com> address to avoid this problem.
We used to be able to relay through another SMTP server but ISPs have
gotten smart over the past 20 years to prevent spam.

Additionally, Chris should set an SPF/TXT record on his domain to verify
email sent through @<domain.com> To avoid triggering any spam blocking
tools as well.
