It's probably got something to do with the connotations of laying that are in common usage (note that I'm being a little vague here to keep from triggering corporate email censorship). Perhaps rewriting to use something like "layout design"?

Somehow that grates on me. In some cases I don't mind allowing for personal
likes and dislikes, and I have even adopted some word choices that I used
to dislike. But this word, for some reason, is hard for me to stomach.

Comments? Suggestions?
