I just use SnagIt and while it isn't free, it is so cheap for the power it has in the last few releases. You do need to open the editor first, but I don't need to use it so often that it bothers me.

But what I wanted to say is how much I appreciate the list when it comes to suggestions like Lauren just gave with the link to other options. I usually just quietly watch, but I just had to speak up.

Thanks Lauren! And thanks to all for your contributions. I'm always learning cool stuff by lurking.
