I love this list too. :) Love to exchange experience or actual knowledge as well.

As regards our profession and my own way into it: I loved reading and writing ever since I can remember. I learned to read when I was four years old. I've read books in the amount of a mid-sized library. Partly replacing bullies in the neighbourhood with them in those early years. ;)

To this day, all those books that were later complemented with my studies of literature and culture stand me in good stead when writing. Like just so many 'templates'...

I've worked for quite a number of companies and also multiple places and departments of the German university I attended until I finally got my M.A. degree. It was a long and thorny road since I had to work for a living, while raising my child and working with limited contracts - sometimes three part-time positions in parallel.
I think few people can 'boast' to have 21 certificates and job references to their name... (-âââ)

There's _little_ in the way of human or indeed corporate behaviour, you might say, the behaviour found in work places, that is strange to me.
Humans - and bosses, for that matter - seem to be a lot alike in most places around the world - with some spicy cultural extras thrown in. I always am happy when people are friendly or even kind. Because I feel that it's not a matter of course that they would.

Highlights: I worked for a small radio broadcasting company for close on two years on and off, where we were taught radio scripting and writing for news 'from the ground up'. Loved the experience! But came to realize that such scripting involved writing simply and to my mind getting things rather entertaining than anything else, simply summarized. That's why I went on to work as online-editor and finally found my way into what I call "texts and technology" - technical writing.

Well, that's as short I can make it just now - over here it's very early morning... these days looking forward to uninterrupted sleep again.. (âââ)

I think regarding our work for and in a company the business use case should be tried to made clear to ramp up the standing of the technical writer(s): What kind of revenue is connected to our work? In short:
What are the numbers they earn in terms of money - or would loose by not having that work...

Have a fine day (or night) ahead!

Nina

Gene, I remember your name from my active time on this listserv back in its
early years (mid- to late-90s). I really should be more involved with the
list; I'm sure there's more that I could learn from everyone.

It was this list that gave me my first software sale. I created Digesters
Reader to make reading the list easier to do. I sold maybe a dozen licenses
to the software. Quite a fun experience. I wish I still had my source code
for that. Back up your hard drives, everyone! ð
