Try telling them:
Type A to answer, or D to delete.
That is, tell them the actual TRUTH! (Novices, especially, are literalists.)
Also, when dealing with novices, it's especially important to have
veryshort task-oriented sections--one titled To Answer Messages, for
example, and another titled To Delete Messages. They must be self-
contained and not rely on the reader's having studied some earlier
section on notation.
THERE ARE NO WRITER-FRIENDLY READERS, JUST READER-FRIENDLY WRITERS.
