One of the most important skills for tech writers, aside from personal
communication, is organization. I think one of the best exercises for
a tech writing student is writing and organizing lists and procedures. The
engineer may be able to tell you all the things that need to be done, but it
most likely won't be in the most logical order for the user.

If we hire any tech writer here, that is definitely one of the tests
that he would be given. If you can't organize information, there's no
place for you as a technical communicator.
