We take pleasure in announcing the establishment at Utrecht
University of the

CENTRE FOR LANGUAGE AND COMMUNICATION (CLC)

The CLC is a research group within the Faculty of Arts of
Utrecht University. It was set up in order to gain insight
into factors that determine success or failure in human verbal
communication and in how the relevant abilities are acquired.
The ultimate aim with regard to these abilities is to develop
methods and techniques to facilitate both acquisition and

The CLC was officially established on january 1st, 1993. To
celebrate the establishment, an `inaugural symposium' took
place on june 25th. At this symposium, Dr A. Verhagen (CLC)
spoke about the relation between language and communication.
Professor W. Zwanenburg, dean of the Faculty of Arts,
commented on Verhagen's talk. Professor Herrzlitz and
professor Van den Hoven (chairmen of the CLC Research Advisory
Committee en the CLC Standing Committee respectively)
introduced the CLC.
At the symposium, a volume of papers by the CLC-members and
others (`Taal in onderwijs en organisatie, een vlootschouw van
onderzoek' - "Language in education and organisation, an
overview of research") was presented to prof. Herrlitz because
of his 50th birthday and his 15 years of dedication to the
faculty. The book, which contains several essays in English,
gives an impression of CLC-research.
