Brenda Rubens wrote an interesting article that examines the style/voice
in four computer manuals ("Phenomenology, Metaphor, and Computer
Documentation: A Move Toward A More Self Conscious Approach to Technical
Writing" _Journal of Technical Writing and Communication_ Vol. 14(1),
1984). While analyzing the text in these manuals, she makes good
distinctions between "cute" stuff and useful approaches to presenting
information in easy and accessable ways. Worth a look.
