Well, all of you who have just recently been launched on the something for
nothing campaign of trying to get upgrades for outdated software, beware.
It may not be illegal, it is probably immoral, but worse than that, it
probably won't work.

Many software companies offer upgrades to registered users of certain
software packages who registered BERFORE the new software package came
out. This is certainly true of Aldus, who publically announced that if
you wanted to upgrade from Pagemaker 4.* to 5.0 you absolutely had to
purchase it and register it not later than (xx/xx/93). There is no way
of getting them to consider allowing you to uprage from 3.2 to 5.0,
although they may wait to laugh at you until after you have hung up.

Remember. Software companies don't have to upgrade you. They do it as
a service to there customers. If they think you're trying to take them
for a ride, they are well within their rights to tell you to take a
hike.

The author of RedRider, a mac communication software package went so far
as to rename the package "WhiteKnight" several versions ago, so that he
would no longer have to support the old ones. Too many free "upgrades"
were making his business unprofitable. He no longer offers "free unlimited
upgrades" to registered users of WhiteKnight.

"There aint no somethin' fer nuthin, there aint no somethin' for free.
There aint no somethin' fer nuthin, and you aint gonna get it from me."
