Well, I know from personal experience that deaf and hearing-impaired people,
when talking on the phone using TDDs (300 baud modems), throw in lots of non-
verbal asides, such as "(smile)" "(rueful grin)" etc. The TDDs are
descendents of the old clunky teletypewriters used by deaf printers for
personal communication after hours in newspaper printing plants, so this
tradition pre-dates computer use.
