Karen,

Consider these ideas:

* Edit and package assignments you completed for copyediting
class; these are legitimate samples of your writing.

* Create a short writing sample using the prospective client's
information, e.g. a press release about the company's new
product.

* Ask former supervisors/managers for a brief, informative
letter documenting the work you did for them. When making
such a request, I always give the person a list of the
points I need them to cover.
