Spamming

Several people wrote to ask me what spamming is. This is what has been
happening to techwr-l (and other lists I'm on): a sender spams the net
by sending unsolicited posts to a large number of groups. It goes without
saying that the post may be inappropriate for most, if not all, of those
groups. In some circles (not mine!) this is a form of entertainment.

The name comes from a Monty Python script--someone posted it on a list
I'm on but I have already deleted it. Basically every word in the script
is spam. It's a funny-sounding word.
