I understand that former and future managers can manage to discuss your work
abilities if they so desire.

When I leave a company, I always ask for a letter of reference. It doesn't
carry a lot of weight, but it's better than nothing at all.

I find that my former managers also move, change jobs, get laid off. In my
particular case, if I don't keep track of them personally, I'd never be able
to give a reference.

I keep all the great letters of praise about my work and include the best
and the most recent in my portfolio.
