I agree that Word is a "dog" when it comes to saving big files with lots of
graphics. I use Word 2.0a because our copy of Word 6.0 wasn't compatible with
our PC-NFS network.
Anyway, I use an add-in program called Quicture that makes the management of
my big, heavy-graphic training manuals more efficient.
Although I'm not trying to sell or endorse Quicture (by Wextech of NY), I have
found this tool to be a lifesaver.
