Shut down vrs shutdown

Subject: Shut down vrs shutdown

As I look at it, shut down is a verb, such as "shut it down". I would not say
"shut down it". Shutdown, as one word, I would consider as an adjective, as
in "the shutdown process".

We can look to other examples, such as log on and logon.

This has been one man's opinion.
