I made the change from tech writer to journalist for mags and newpapers
Although I have a MAC LC , I found that my 33 Mhz 386 (cheap clone) PC with
8 MB RAM , 200MB Hard disk and internal 14,400 fax modem is better for
work as a journalist. Although I have a compuserve account, I also
have a flat rate internet account which I use more , because as an
American in London, I do a lot of email and FTP abroad.
On The 386 PC , I run LINUX ( the Unix like O.S. which is free and
can be ftp'd from intenet sites like : sunsite.unc.edu). I am sure
that one of your colleagues at UCSD could help you get LINUX running.
Its great for Internet access.
for DTP and writing I also have MS-Windows 3.1 on this 386 PC, with
MS Word , Pagemaker and WinFax Pro 3 for sending faxes.
I found the PC more versatile and cheaper than using a MAC.
good luck. BTW I lived in LaJolla in 1979 & 80. I miss the sunny
weather and nachos at the old town mexican cafe.
