Arlen,

Thank you for the valid points (quibbles with advice) you make. I had assumed
(never assume anything) that a person buying a machine would send in a
warranty card (which needs the serial number) in order to exercise the
warranty. And, if unable to send in a warranty card, then that person would
be suspicious about the dealer selling the machine. My advice has always been
if you purchase a computer at a store open up the box and inspect it before
you take it out of the store. Makes things a lot easier if you find the
screen was smashed in shipment before you leave the store. You can exchange
it right then and there. Stores might not like it, but if they want the sale
they'll do it.

And, of course, before you sign up at a university in order to get an
education discount, make certain what you need to do to qualify.
