I found out that Torah, which was on scrolls, was also read
horizontally.
** Was? At least one copy of the Torah (meaning, in this sense, the first five
books of the Bible) is still to be found on a scroll in every functioning
synagogue, and in a thoroughgoing Orthodox synagogue the whole scroll will
be read aloud in the course of a year. The scroll consists of handwritten
parchment pages, a couple of columns per page. The scroll as a whole is
oriented right to left, the columns are read top to bottom.
New Torah scrolls are still painstakingly handwritten by professional
scribes.
