Subject:the copyed list From:LaVonna Funkhouser <lffunkhouser -at- HALNET -dot- COM> Date:Fri, 19 Aug 1994 13:18:43 -0500
I received some requests from techwr-lers recently
about subscribing to the copyediting-l list. You'll
find info about that list in the message I've appended.
I marked the line about subscribing with >>>>.
IMHO, copyediting-l is a bit less chummy than techwr-l,
and as a result of the subject matter, it is admittedly
more nit-picky. I receive it as a digest because I found
that many of the replies are repetitive. Despite this,
it is a useful forum for hammering out style issues.

*****************************************************
Copyediting-L runs on Listprocessor 5.5, created by
A. Kotsikonas. The commands are _different_ from
those used by other listservs. Please save this
welcome message for future reference.
*****************************************************
Welcome to Copyediting-L, a list for copy editors and other defenders of
the English language who want to discuss anything related to editing:
sticky style issues; newspaper, technical, and other specialized editing;
reference books; client relations; Internet resources; electronic editing
and software; freelance issues; and so on.
Copyediting-L is an unmoderated list. Yes, we're talking anarchy, folks.
Because I (the listowner) am paid to do editing and not "mess around" on
the computer all day, this list is, and will remain, unmoderated.
Copyediting-L is not archived. If you see something you like, save your
own copy.

POSTING MESSAGES TO COPYEDITING-L
*****************************************************
To send a message to every subscriber, address the e-mail to
copyediting-l -at- cornell -dot- edu
Keep your messages short to conserve bandwidth and help those
subscribers who must pay to receive messages. If you are replying to
a message, delete the original message, or at least edit it.
Use a descriptive subject line. Many people decide whether they want to
read a message based on the content of the subject line.
Sign all your messages with your name and e-mail address. Some mailers
strip off the headers, so the receiver cannot reply unless you include
your address in the message itself.
Do not point out grammar mistakes in people's messages, unless explicitly
requested to do so.
Respect each other. On this list, diversity in editing and opinions
about editing are not only tolerated, but encouraged. Argument is fine;
character digs are not. Remember, there is a real person on the other
end. You are responsible for what you write.
When posting information from sources other than yourself, keep in mind
that copyright restrictions may apply.
