Metro Baltimore STC Chapter October Meeting

In Brief:
=========
Topic: The Internet: Why Travel the Information Superhighway
(and How Do We Get On?)
Date: Wednesday, October 12th, 1994
Time: 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM
Place: Holiday Inn South, 6600 Ritchie Highway, Glen Burnie, MD
(from Baltimore Beltway, take Exit 3 South)
Cost: $9 for buffet and meeting, $3 for meeting only

It seems that we can't open a newspaper, turn on the television
news, or listen to the radio without hearing something about the
Information Superhighway or about the Internet. On October 12th, the
Metro Baltimore STC is offering a chance to see and hear about the
Internet in more depth than most media coverage has provided.

The Internet is a worldwide "network of computer networks," and by
some estimates it connects 20 million users. That number is expected
to be 100 million by 1998. So technical communicators should plan to
be ahead of the crowd; much documentation is already being developed
using the Internet as the medium for communicating between author
and publisher and as the medium for delivering to users. And the
possibilities for information-gathering are almost endless.

Our guest speakers are: Katherine Branch (head librarian at the
Truxal Library of Anne Arundel Community College) and Barbara Smith,
(chief of the networking branch at the Maryland State Department of
Education). Ms. Branch will be discussing the variety and wealth of
information sources on the Internet. Ms. Smith will be discussing
the state's Sailor project: a ground-breaking and free Internet
gopher server. (Don't worry: you'll find out at the meeting what a
"gopher" is!) We plan to demonstrate some of the technology and
interfaces associated with the Internet, too.

Meeting Agenda:
===============
6:00 PM Gathering time
6:30 PM Sandwich buffet dinner
7:30 PM Presentations and demonstrations
9:00 PM Adjournment
