In regards to professional societies and conferences, IEEE sponsors
a group called the Professional Communication Society. The PCS sponsored the
International Professional Communication Conference in September, in
Banff, Alberta, Canada. The conference was followed by
the SIGDOC 94 conference. (Most of the speakers spoke at both
conferences.) Overall, there were about 200 conference participants
and 90 speakers at the IPCC. The IPCC Proceedings is about 400 pages in length.
You can join the PCS by contacting IEEE. And you can also order
copies of the IPCC 1994 Proceedings from IEEE.
If you do order the IPCC 1994 Proceedings, make sure you read the
paper called "Spiraling Up and Down the Spiral Development Staircase".
It is a very well written paper that combines research with practical tips
for technical communicators who work on spiral (iterative) software projects.
