Gwen Gall mentioned a perfect-type binding with better layflat (compound
word as used by our printing company) characteristics. This is called
Otabind, and it produces a manual that lays reasonably flat, though not
as flat as a binder.
Our company recently switched from binders for the various reasons people
have mentioned, to Otabind. We didn't even consider traditional perfect
binding. The process is a bit more expensive, and not all printers
handle Otabind, though. Our last manual got shipped to Houston from
Tucson, >1000 miles. So far, we've heard nothing but kudos from our
customers about the binding change.
