Ira Flatow to Keynote at InterChange 1995

Ira Flatow, National Public Radio (NPR) host and executive
producer of Talk of the Nation: Science Friday, will be the
keynote speaker at InterChange. A veteran science correspondent,
Emmy Award-winning journalist, and author of two books, Flatow
should prove to be an entertaining and informative speaker.

Flatow has been an NPR science correspondent since 1971, was host
of the Public Broadcasting System's (PBS) "Newton's Apple" from
1982 to 1988, and has written "Rainbows, Curve Balls, and Other
Wonders of the Natural World Explained" and "They All Laughed:
From Light Bulbs to Lasers, the Fascinating Stories Behind the
Great Inventions That Have Changed Our Lives." He is recipient
(twice) of the American Association for the Advancement of
Science's Westinghouse Journalism Award and a member of the
National Association of Science Writers. For more information

With speakers like Ira Flatow, InterChange 1995 will be an
exciting exchange of ideas for the technical communication
industry. For information about registering for InterChange,
contact John Hurtado, Conference Director, at (508) 934-2467.

Tell A Colleague
You may know that InterChange is a great exchange of ideas,
techniques, and tools for technical communicators, but are your
co-workers aware of the benefits of InterChange? Tell a
colleague about InterChange!

. The Seventh Annual InterChange Technical Writing Conference
will be held Tuesday and Wednesday, April 4 and 5, 1995 at the
Ramada Rolling Green Hotel in Andover, Massachusetts.
. The two-day conference costs only $285 or just $175 for one-day
attendance. Student rates are available.
. InterChange is dedicated to bringing technical communication
professionals together to learn about new communication theories
and techniques and their applications to industry practices.
. Co-sponsored by the University of Massachusetts Lowell and the
Boston and Northern New England chapters of the STC, InterChange
attracts technical communications professionals from across
eastern Canada and the United States.
. InterChange serves as a great way to meet colleagues, exchange
new ideas, and have a good time in the process.

Attend Exciting Sessions
InterChange sessions focus on subjects from six general stem
areas. The sessions discuss topics concerning:
. Communication Techniques: the principles of design and writing
methodologies, the applications of learning theories, and issues
of language usage,
. Education and Training: the nature of technical writing,
technical training, and teaching technical writing,
. Marketing Research and Writing: the planning, research,
analytical methods, and writing of marketing materials,
. New Technologies: the latest advancements in media, software
and hardware tools, and management of writing projects,
. Professional Development: the management skills, project
development skills, interpersonal skills, and project development
skills necessary for professional communicators, and
. Scientific and Medical Writing: the writing and teaching
skills helpful for the specific needs of various scientific
disciplines.

Design a Logo
For the past seven years, InterChange has grown without the
benefit of a logo to better express and symbolize the principles
for which InterChange stands. We need your help. Design a logo
for InterChange and receive reduced registration ($100 for two
days and $60 for one day), not to mention the prestige of
winning!

All entrees should be suitable for printing in monochromatic
tones and must be formatted in .PCX, .EPS, .TIF, or .BMP for IBM
systems. Entrees may be e-mailed, but must be in .BMP format.
The deadline for this contest is January 13, 1995, so start
designing! For more information, see "Contact The Director",
below.

Support a Worthy Scholarship
Proceeds from the InterChange Technical Writing Conference fund
the InterChange Scholarship, a $500 award to a student enrolled
in the University of Massachusetts Lowell's Technical Writing
Certificate Program. The faculty of the program and the STC
award the scholarship on the basis of merit. Your participation
at InterChange directly assists a student about to enter the
technical communications field.

Last year's scholarship recipient, Carol Eyman, now works for
PennWell Publishing in Nashua, NH, where she is Production Editor
of "Laser Report", the bi-weekly newsletter of "Laser Focus World
Magazine." Eyman feels that last year's conference was helpful
in orienting herself and other new professionals about current
issues within the technical communications industry.
