Just to give others hope--I was in fact hired directly from a job fair several
years ago here in Cincinnati, OH. Ours actually advertised Technical Writing
jobs along with Engineering positions. Being new to the area, it gave me the
opportunity to talk to several different companies at one time, and to this day
I still have the handout with all their addresses in case the need should arise
again.

An interesting aside: I was rejected by the company I *really* wanted to work
for, but was hired as a consultant through a consulting firm. Well, guess which
company I ended up being contracted to? Right--the one that originally turned me
down. After consulting there for about a year, they hired me to a permanent
position! (Note: This is not, however, my current employer.)

Moral: Don't give up; things will work themselves out eventually.
