Paula and others teaching technical writing:
Topics my students choose arise from their work or community situations;
for instance, an engineering or technology student may have problematized
a subject of interest - one is working metal stress in lawnmowers, so she
spends time investigating machine failure in the maintenance dept. of
this organization. Instead of a report, another project is an article on
a way of teaching reading, based on qualitative research.
Other students have been inspired by reading "Technical Communication,"
and are looking into gender and language issues, technical writing and
liability. Three are investigating the Internet resources available for
their major. One is writing a training manual for a police department
employee.Everybody writes about water pollution and air pollution, or public
transportation, various environmental problems. In this class such issues
are part of the weekly writing --students here work in small groups on tasks
designed to teach them something they need for the next part of the unit.
What is everybody else doing in technical writing classes?
