What is considered THE reference book for determining proper use in
situations such as chosing between:

"For the purpose of this ..."

"For the purposes of this ..."

It would appear that one is singular and the other is plural (gee, I'm
really on a roll tonight!). I don't want to discuss this case, just find
out what are consideed THE reference books in both the USA and the UK.

Is there a FAQ that lists THE books?
