The last salary survey by the American Society of Indexers (ASI) gave a
figure of $32.50 per hour as the average rate for professional indexers.
As a freelancer who provides indexing services for both corporate
clients and publishing houses throughout the U.S., I'd say that ASI's
figure is fairly accurate. However, before you start thinking that you
might get rich as a freelance indexer, keep in mind that you'll probably
experience a few lulls throughout the year, so you can't count on 40 hours
per week at $32.50 per hour.
