I don't know when Ted Nelson did his thing, but
Vannevar Bush wrote about the "memex," which sounds
like a hypertext-type concept, in The Atlantic Monthly

Lisa Baker asked who was the originator of the term hypertext. "The Computer
Glossary", 5th ed. says this: "The concept was coined by Ted Nelson was a
method for making the computer respond to the way humans think and require
information".

No clue to his whereabouts, of course....
