I have been using an HP DeskWriter (HP DeskJet for the Mac) at home for about
three years now. I went with the inkjet printer over the laser printer for a
couple of reasons.

   1) The initial cost of the laser printer is higher. When I bought the inkjet
      printer I could get "close enough to laser for me" printing at "nowhere
      near laser" prices. Make sure you see a print out of each before buying.
      The results you need depend on what you are producing.

   2) The replacement cost of laser cartridges is higher than inkjet
      cartridges. A new inkjet cartridge costs about $20 (if I remember
      correctly) and can be purchased at any office supply store. I don't
      remember the exact cost comparison to laser toner cartridges, but that's
      probably because it scared me so much I blocked it out mentally (even
      compared to recycled laser cartridges). I tried using the syringe and ink
      refill trick on the inkjet cartridges, but found that it didn't work all
      that well for me. The true cost of cartridge replacement really needs to
      be compared at the cost per sheet level. Your favorite office supply
      store may have this type of information. Maybe one of our peers out there
      can tell us. Hmmm?
